about

The third album from the Saturday Morning Canasta Club

Welcome to our third album ‘If I Were a Little Birdie’. After all, it is all about the music.

We encourage you to return those days of old where you'd curl up and explore an album. And we're eclectic enough that if you don't like a song, there's always a skip button. Don't press it twice though – the next song's always better... And thanks for the cuddle.

Track Name: No Bells
Stopped the papers
Stopped ordering the pizza as well
Don’t want nobody ringing that bell

Told my neighbours
Stopped visiting to check I’m well
Don’t want nobody ringing that bell

Chorus
Don’t want the sounds of the sounds, Of the pastor of doom.
Don’t want the sounds of those sounds, Entering this room.
Don’t want the news of the news, That he’s at peace, no Don’t want the bells of all bells, To Find Me

Broke the porch light
Stopped asking for visits from friends
Don’t want nobody knowing I'm in
I’ve read his letters
Telling of snipers and shells
Don’t want nobody ringing that bell

Chorus x2

No, no, no Don’t want no bells, no I don’t want them, Don’t want no bells, please I don't want no bells
Track Name: Angel of the Dark
I'll sit by you and touch you
Four or five times
Just to let you know
That I'm still here

Waiting for a chance
A chance at romance
Wondering what you see
What will become of me
Angel of the dark
You've captured my heart

Chorus
My temperature is rising
Upwards and onwards
And I don't want it to fall down
You're the apple of my eye Queen in the sky
You're a queen bee queen bee
As you are, an angel in the dark
You've captured my heart

The best things in life are unseen
That's why when we kiss,
We hug, we dream
We close our eyes
It’s no surprise from the angel in the dark

Chorus
Track Name: 500 Letters from New York
This ain’t some words about a geyser This ain’t a poem about some diamond deal No, these words are a little wiser Yeah I’m talking 'bout the way I feel And I’m feelin’ the weight Oh yeah, I’m feelin’ the weight You know I’m feelin’ the weight Yeah, I’m feelin’ the weight
Telegrams sayin’ that you love me
But dots and dash ain’t going buy a meal
Dust clouds up the skies above me
Hide my viewing of this brand new deal

And I’m feelin’ the weight
And yeah, I’m feelin’ the weight
You know I’m feelin’ the weight
Yeah, I’m feelin’ the weight
And all we do is wait

Chorus
Five, five, five, five hundred letters from New York
Five, five, five, five hundred reasons you ain’t comin’ home
I’ve, I’ve, I’ve, I’ve stopped greeting the postman
I, I, I, I feel completely alone

I got the words that you were comin’
I got the words that we were meetin’ at last
And my heart startin’ the drummin’
As we waited near those railroad tracks
And then I started to wait
Yeah I started to wait
At that station in Denver
And all we did was wait
All we ever do is wait

Chorus x 2
Track Name: Depth Perception
Andy ran a bar, had a car, kept a jar
Of every penny that he found
There were three when we met, and
Twelve when he let me down

Joey loved his soaps, smoked his dope
And gave up hope of ever finding his place
Barely present when we met
And disappeared with out a trace

Chorus
Every one had a different start
But every ending’s the same
And every time after some wine and reflection
I blame it all on my depth perception
That makes me bad as this game

Tommy read his books, had the looks and took his mama off to church
He didn’t tell me when we met
He had a wife that took him first

Robbie gave the ring and it seems he had a thing for the very essence of me
Said he knew it when we met
And then he ran away from me

Chorus

So there you go - buy me a drink
I’ve got a feeling about you
You’ve heard my tales - had time to think
So how about me and you
So there you go - buy me a drink
I’ve got a feeling about you
You’ve heard my tales - had time to think
Now what are you gonna do

And here we go with a brand new start
Not every ending’s the same
This time I’ll ask for some wine and attention
With some changes to my depth perception
I think I’ll win at this game
I think I’ll win at this game
Maybe I’ll win at this game
I think I’ll win at this game
Track Name: Starin' at My Shoes
It’s trite, it ain't right
It’s a bloody stereotype
To knock a poor girl off her feet
Ah, you must have bit me
Injected something deep within me
Now every time you come round
I keep looking down at my shoes

It's wrong, it's so wrong
And I've said it all along
You knocked a poor girl off her feet
It's your smile
And it’s been there all the while
And every time you flash it round
I find myself staring down at my shoes

Am I in love
And would it make a difference, 'Cos it’s all become different - to me
To me

It's me, let's agree
Now it's out there uncomfortably
You knocked a poor girl off her feet
I'll take no action
Leave my poor little heart in traction
And every time you see me round I'll be the sad girl staring down at her shoes
Track Name: TWIRL
What I really love
Is the snooze button on my cell phone
Cos the snooze button on my cell phone
Wakes me up when you're not home
And that's what I really love

What I really love
Is texting your foes while steeped in rum cos texting my foes while steeped in rum
Causes lots of fuss but it’s lots of fun
And that's what I really love

Chorus
Rum and texting and Sudoku
Snooze buttons when I'm not next to you
Distractions and destructions
Until you're coming home
And you coming home is what I'd really love

What I really love,
Is your blue rain coat on the blue chair
Cos your blue rain coat on the blue chair
Lets me know that you are there
And that's what I really love

Chorus

What I'd really love Is for God to freeze-frame Thursday And What I'd really love Is for my words to fly away
And what I'd really love Is for you to hold my hand
That's what I'd really love

Chorus
Track Name: Whisper
Whisper as I walk away
Wishing you had said more to me
Whisper as I walk away
Wishing you had said more to me

You are adrift on a sea of feelings
And I'm not rowing out to save you
I'll observe from afar as you drift away
On the waves of our love

Cause I'm not waiting in line for you
To come around this time
I'm not waiting in line just to find
That you've fallen behind
Fallen behind
Track Name: Loved One's Call
I’m missing you
Our search together
Well, it’s over I remember when
When we looked over the edge
What did we see
It was us
And that was scary

Yeah, but children laugh
And grasses turn green
Why don’t we actually say
What we really mean
And I held their hands
On each one’s day
Then I went home
With nothing to say
But children cry
And dead leaves fall
Do we hear their words
Of our loved one’s call

You know, that day you left
The future looked ah so rosy
We told jokes
And we laughed a lot
The world was, the world was cosy
You had a fight with the one
The one you love
The world turned hazy
Then you left in such a huff
You disappeared in just a puff
And that was crazy
But children cry
And dead leaves fall
Do we hear their words
Of our loved one's call
Track Name: Strange Clock
My wife and I brought home a clock today
A small self winding clock today
it ticks and tocks a lot they say
Its bells go off all night they say

Strange clock, they say, strange clock.
Strange clock, I think it’s a strange clock

They say our years flyin' by in years of three and five With be forever broken now into its ticks and tocks
They say our lives, too quickly blindly moving past
Forever measured now by our strange new clock

Maybe so, it sounds mighty strange
It’s just a small self winding clock.
And frankly between just you and me
It’s got a loud tick tock

My wife and I brought home a clock today
A small self winding clock today
it ticks and tocks a lot they say
Its bells go off all night they say

Strange clock, they say, strange clock.
Strange clock, I think we got a strange clock

But then again late at night when yet again the bells bring on the lights
When yet again I reach for him and think
Lord God, I've never seen such beautiful hands
Lord God I've never seen such a beautiful face

And my life is held between each tick and tock

Strange clock I think, strange clock
Strange clock, I think we got a strange clock

Strange clock, I think it’s a strange clock
Track Name: Cold Light of Day
She takes a pill every morning
To stave off the curse
Of an unwanted saviour
Who'd only make things worse

She tried to tell him something
But he wanted to speak first
And as he walked out the door
He said your bubble has burst

So she went shopping at midnight
And got counterfeit smiles
From all the boys on the sidewalk
Who could see it in her eyes

That all the hair and the makeup
Was just a disguise
For all that she'd been promised
But turned out to be lies

Oh, she is just a little girl who lost her way in the cold light of day
Oh, she is trying to find her way, home

Ever since she came here
She's been feeling alone
The time has come it seems to her
To go back home

They all said they'd write to her
And call her on the phone
But life gets in the way, they say
And memories get overgrown

Oh, she is just a little girl
Who lost her way in the cold light of day
Oh, she is trying to find her way, home now

She's trying to find her way home
Track Name: Tuesday in May
The bar’s kinda loud the boys kinda dumb
My band’s a bit off and my brain’s a bit numb
But I see you swayin’
Findin’ a beat that we can’t even keep
And there’s some game that you’re playin’
That’s pullin’ me from this sleep

The beer’s a bit warm and the bar’s pretty dead
The band’s disappeared those boys are singin’ instead And I see you swaying
Finding a beat they can’t even keep
And this game that you’re playing
Is pullin’ me out of this sleep

Chorus
Can’t you just sit with me
Cos I don’t even know
A single page of your history,
Or how this day’s supposed to go
Is this the first day of us
Or just a Tuesday in May
Oh, can’t you just sit with me
To sort out this day

I’ve had it with Tuesdays
I’ve had it with Mays
My nights have grown beatless and so have my days But I’m feelin’ your rhythm the same tune’s run hot ‘cross my skin
Oh, Can’t you just sit with me and let a new song begin
Track Name: Wisconsin
Two billion snowflakes in Wisconsin
Every memory has a hazy hue
Like a TV set from the fifties
With a picture that’s not quite tuned
And every snow flake in Wisconsin
Reminds me of an empty bar
And my live sets thru my catalogue
Willing tips into my empty jar

Chorus
And all I’ve got is this guitar
And my bleeding fingers that will never heal
Where is the button for restart
Or the order for the final meal

A billion footsteps echo down these halls
Every footstep’s like a second hand
From a pocket watch that’s used by bankers
To run their meetings close to plan

And every footstep shuffled down these halls
Is a story of a broken man
Some of them share my air
Some of them sucked a bullet from my band

Chorus

She liked my third song
She had a big bed
With clocks on either side.
He slipped in with a gun against my head
He ain’t here, I’m here instead

Chorus
Track Name: Monkey Space Camp
I was picked for general fitness
Tend to sit around all the time
I didn’t eat those buttons
Or get tangled in your sewage lines

I’m circling round the globe
With wires measuring my vital signs
I still can’t eat those buttons
No - My main job’s not to die

Chorus
Thinking back to space camp
Monkey Space Camp was quite a thrill
Sucking tubes of banana goo
While training to sit still

There’s Boo Boo from Morocco
And Sasha from Inverness
Loo Loo puked during weightlessness
A down right monkey
A down right monkey mess.

And I know I’ll be famous
Parading down 5th Avenue
But there’s been some recent rumours
They’ll send men to try what we can do

And if I could write some poetry
I’d opine about this endless sky
But I’m really just a monkey
Trying hard not to die

Monkey Monkey Space Camp
Who thought we’d have such a place?
A crazy cold war - it's tit for tat
A space race In outer space

Chorus 2
Thinking back to space camp
Monkey Space Camp was quite a thrill
Sucking tubes of banana goo
While training to sit still

There’s Frankie with his big pink butt
And Coco all chocolate brown
Coco climbed up Space Command
And we still can’t get her down
